Drivers Lounge was initially inspired by a nasty truck stop bathroom graffiti* that we kept encountering, and by our shared fascination with trucker culture. Over the years we both have spent a lot of time in truck stops, and we both definitely have a thing for the road. On one of our film tours we decided to make an installation based on the bizarre domesticity, hyper nic-nacness, and recent video saturation of the truck stop environment. The graffiti we found contained a CB handle which gave us an opportunity to interact with drivers on the radio. We installed a C.B. radio in our van and these conversations were recorded and edited by Bill Daniel, and played back on telephones stationed at the lounge's tables. Visuals consisted of footage that Vanessa shot at various truck stops while we were touring, archival truck related films from Dennis Nyback, and a single channel from Animal Charm, who we invited to participate in the piece, thinking that their work would fit well in the lounge that we were creating. There also were four slides of urinals in the bathroom part of our truck stop.
